Artist Statement
I create works that explore concepts and perspectives of medical trauma, the human body, and the intersection of the physical and anatomical with the mental and emotional. In 2019, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that has significantly altered my life since I first developed symptoms. My pieces convey my own personal experiences with chronic illness in day-to-day life. In particular, I paint large-scale works that dwarf their real-life counterparts to display both how all-consuming these conditions can become and how much space they have taken up in my life. I also experiment with pieces that invade the viewer's space to make them incapable of being ignored, which happens too often when someone is chronically ill and searching for answers. I play with perspective to portray personal experience and grant typically able-bodied viewers an insight to the lifestyle of a chronically ill person.
I aim to create an immersive experience with my work, enabling anyone to place themselves in the physical and emotional perspective of someone with chronic medical conditions, and in turn, develop a better understanding of the day-to-day struggle of these conditions.
